Hey there everyone! So I haven't been on in forever (well, I was on the other day but whatever). I've been busy with school, friends, and this new idea of college. So I figured I would make a little tip that will maybe help you get through things, at least a little better :)
☼Before College☼
Note: Most of this category is for people who will be living on campus.
Two Weeks Before
O1: Two weeks before I needed to head to college was when I started to pack. Get boxes (preferably ones you can store away easily to use later, but so they won't get in the way) and start packing up what you're taking! Pack up clothing, video games, books, movies, etc. Make sure you pack up EVERYTHING you want to take. Depending on how far away from your college your home is, you won't be visiting every other day (such as with me, considering I live six hours away).
♥ Make sure you remember all those important things, like soap, shampoo, deodorant, school books/supplies, etc. Just having clothes won't get you very far!
A Week Before
O1: Have you got everything packed? If not, hop to it! While you're working on packing, it's best to re-check. A check list would be a great idea, just to make sure you have everything.
O2: Do you have all your school supplies? While college is different than 'regular' school, you still need some of those regular things...paper, pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, etc etc.
♥ Do you have a laptop? If you'd rather type up your notes instead of write them, a laptop would be a good idea to bring with you.
♥ A few other nice ideas to bring with you would be a desk calender (write down EVERYTHING on here. From the first moment you get your syllabi, write down test and assignment dates---and make sure you actually cast your calender a glance every now and then), post-it notes (always great to write reminders on and post anywhere---I like putting them on my wall by the door and on the pull out part of my desk), and a dry-erase board (to also write reminders on).
O3: This is one of the slightly depressing parts of it, but make sure during this last week you see all your friends! Hang out at home, go to a movie, get frozen yogurt, go out and eat, whatever you guys like to do. Also, make sure you spend some time with your family!
The Day Before
O1: Uh oh...the day before you move off suddenly snuck up on you, didn't it? Well, this is the rush day! Make sure everything is packed, you've said your goodbyes, and get a good night's rest!
☼Once You Get to College☼
The Day of Move In
O1: Depending on how far away your college is and what time move in is, you may or may not have to leave home the day before move in. Either way, make sure you leave early enough to make it there on time!
O2: We had trolleys to move things in with. If you do, fit as much as you can on the trolley so you don't have to make so many trips!
O3: Worry with sorting out your room once you have everything inside. Don't try setting it up until you see how everything will fit.
O4: Make goodbyes quick! If your parents came to help you move in,make sure you get the goodbyes out of the way quickly. My parents stayed through the weekend, and I think it made it harder for me when they had to go.
Getting to Know Your Roommate(s)
O1: If you're living on campus, I'm sure you'll be living with at least one roommate, unless something comes up. So you need to get to know him/her! My school had an email system where it would tell us who our roommate was and how to contact them, so if you have that provided for you, get to know them that way. If not, after everything settles down the first day, get to know them. Ask them about where they're from, what they like to do, etc. Don't just expect them to talk to you!
The First Day of Classes
O1: Eat a good breakfast (when haven't you heard this?) and make sure you have all the things you need for your classes! Like most first days, you'll be figuring out what all exactly you need for class. So just bring a notebook, pencil, and a folder to put papers in and you should be good.
♥ For extra precaution, bring the book for your class, just in case you do start on anything!
♥ It's a good idea the day before classes begin to find your classrooms. I did this the weekend before classes began, just to make sure I knew where all my rooms were, and also to make sure I had enough time to get between them without running like a mad man!
Finding Friends
O1: Several people have asked me how I find friends. In reality...I have no idea, ha. Apparently, the trick is to just look like you're friendly. (Don't smile like a maniac, that isn't what I'm getting at haha). Just...be friendly! How I met my first college friend (other than my roomie and her bestie that came to college there as well) was at our little coffee place in our student building. I mentioned to her that I saw a post her roommate made about needing a ride to a beach party, so I offered to take them. And that was that :) Just talk! Compliment them, talk to them about a class you share, etc.
Boyfriends and Girlfriends
O1: Do NOT come into college looking for a boy or girlfriend. Your schooling needs to come first, then finding friends and fun, then a significant other.
O2: Be friends first. If you want things to work, get to know him or her before you get into a relationship with them.
O3: If things don't work out, so be it! Either move on, don't deal with them anymore, or just be friends (:
So I think that's about all I have on starting college for the time being. Remember...keep your studies first, but make sure to leave plenty of time for fun!
